Anyone who has not been disqualified from driving is eligible to renew their driving licence.
What are the reasons why someone may need to renew or update their licence?
Driving licences must be renewed and replaced every ten years. Most driving licences are valid until you reach 70. Over 70 your licence must be renewed every 3 years.
Photocards must be replaced every ten years.
You may need to update a license if you have changed your name or address, or you need to update from a paper license to a photo card licence.
What is the process for renewing a car licence?
To renew your 10-year driving licence, provisional or full you can renew online- where you will find costs, payment methods, and what documents and information you need.
You can renew a driver licence online or by post. You will need a valid U.K passport or some other type of identification. You must be able to provide domestic addresses for the last three years. You will also need to include you National Insurance number.
Can all types of driving licences be renewed?
Any driving license which has expired must be renewed otherwise you cannot drive. It is best to apply early so that you can receive your new licence before your current driving licence expires. Please note that applications where the driver has declared a medical condition can potentially take longer to process. If, before your existing licence expires, you have sent in a valid application, you can continue to drive and there is no need to contact the DVLA to check progress.

What is required in order for someone to renew their licence?
If you wish to renew your licence, you must be a U.K resident. Identity documents such as a valid UK passport will be needed. You must supply all home addresses you have lived at over the last 3 years. Your National Insurance number will also be required. You must not already be disqualified from driving.
When you send you get your new licence from the DVLA, you must send off your old photocard.
How long does it take to renew a driving licence?
The minimum time for an online licence application is one week, although it is advisable to allow at least two weeks. For postal application please allow up to 3 weeks.
